German and Anglo-German concertinas were by far the most popular forms of the instrument in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and were a favorite of working class people around the world...

Is anyone out there skilled at playing the concertina?

My significant other has an immense love for music and a knack for figuring out how to play musical instruments. So, I figured I'd get him a concertina.
I don't know too much about them, but I really do enjoy their sound and I know he does too.
I went on an online search for a few, but most of the ones I've looked at -- the reviews have been rife with complaints. It seems as if there are a lot of difficulties with different brands, such as the buttons sticking (or just not working in general when pushed), the reeds falling apart, and/or, the hand straps breaking.
I want to get him a really good quality one, and I'm afraid I'll end up buying one that is defected.
I know I want to get him a 20-30 button Anglo concertina, but that's all I know.
Can anyone (who plays the concertina or has a good knowledge of them) give me some suggestions (brands, types)?
Thanks!

Other than loving their sound, I have no personal knowledge of any of the accordion family of instruments (I play guitar.) However, a couple suggestions.

1) Check out a reputable music store with knowledgeable staff to help you with any questions, and which will stand behind the quality and playability of any instrument they sell.

And 2) Go to a few venues featuring Cajun, Zydeco or traditional Mexican music, in which the concertina figures prominently. Then, if they're accessible, ask the musicians themselves what they'd recommend. After all, their livelihood depends on having the right instrument.

Just a couple thoughts. Good luck.
